On August 8, 2019, the first Wuhan Creative Design Contest, hosted by the Wuhan Municipal People's Government and jointly organized by the Wuhan Urban-Rural Development Bureau and Wuhan Municipal Construction Group, launched its call for entries. The theme of this competition was "Exquisite City, Creative Spaces," aiming to integrate the construction of Wuhan's urban public spaces with its development as a City of Design, emphasizing public participation, and leveraging the international platform of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network for global dissemination. The goal was to better promote Wuhan's urban development and design culture, accelerate the city's progress towards becoming a world-class creative city, and strive to write a new chapter of high-quality development for Wuhan in the new era.
The competition was conducted through mainstream multimedia platforms, targeting both professional institutions and the general public. It spanned four months and included multiple stages such as entry collection, evaluation, public announcement, and award ceremony. The final winners, including gold, silver, and bronze awards as well as the annual "Most Creative Design" award, were exhibited in a dedicated section during the 2019 Wuhan Design Day and the 5th Wuhan Design Biennale, which opened on November 1, 2019, and were honored with a grand award ceremony.
