Project Introduction

From November 11 to 24, 2017, the 4th Wuhan Design Biennale was held citywide. This was the first biennale hosted by Wuhan since it became a UNESCO Creative City of Design. Themed "Design forTomorrow," this biennale featured 30 exhibitions, 26 events, and seven major exhibition areas. It aimed to showcase the convergence and collision of various design disciplines, as well as the close interaction between creative design and urban culture, economy, society, life, and environment. The event sought to infuse new vitality into urban life and nurture emerging forces. The design exhibition emphasized the integration of design with the city, using a variety of methods such as virtual reality (VR), multimedia art, animation and gaming, fashion shows, drawings, models, videos, paintings, and more. This marked the first time that a wide range of design disciplines were collectively displayed, including engineering design, historical architecture, industrial design, animation design, fashion design, photography, fine arts, university student projects, and youth and children's designs. Regarding the exhibition venues, this biennale adopted an innovative "2+N" model. The main venues were located at the South Taizihu Innovation Valley Art Museum and the Tanhualin Exhibition Area. Additionally, other locations like Qingdao Road Ping'e Packaging Factory and the Zhongnan Architectural Design Institute Research and Design Center served as sub-venues, creating a diverse and open exhibition network. For the first time, the biennale utilized the "Wuhan City of Design" self-media matrix to promote the event, sharing Wuhan's design stories from multiple angles through various self-media platforms. This approach fostered deep interactions with the public and shared design concepts widely.
